Two Countries.

North Korea's maximum leader (in his eyes) Kim Jong Il is dead, and replaced by his son Kim Jong Un (In Asia, family names come first).

The more things change ...

The Korean peninsula is a laboratory of economic and political systems; the South going in the direction of democracy and free market, and the North going for a centralized dictatorship of control to a degree probably not even matched under Hitler and the Gestapo.

Giving us ...

That picture says it all. The single dot you see in the North is Pyongyang. To the south, the southern edge of the big splash of lights is Seoul. The historical invasion route into the South was along the axis of that big splash of lights . . . Seoul to Uijonbu to . . . . hmmm, forget the name of the northernmost city. Right where the light touches the demarcation line is Panmunjeom, the joint security area where the UN observers are headquartered and official meetings between the north and south occur. The line of demarcation between the North and South is the most heavily mined area in the world.

How North Korea is still a country, with mass starvation on a 700 calorie a day diet, mystifies me.

I don't really trust the ROKers, but I did enjoy our shore time when the Pearl visited-- my future husband still loves the leather coat he got there, the bakeries were amazing, I am in awe of the internet cafes....

One of the mad midgets is dead. I doubt it will do much good, but I am glad to hear the Chinese are spinning like a top to try to figure out what to do to have control now. ^.^
